I did a time limit and in half hour went through the codex – this is the results and my notes in doing so. Some of the comments are more thinking out loud as did audit (spelling mistakes abound probably
).Information we have:
Releases (new section and need fleshing out).
This really should be a section perhaps by release number not just for the current one in 3 maybe?Team Forums (self explanatory)
Perhaps should be a link though not in documentation?Getting Started
- Before Installing BuddyPress (needs updating?)
To be honest this should be the 101 basics really and it’s like the other installing ones got one heck of a learning curve of information. Surely we should be showing how easy it is – this is all a bit scary content wise.
- Installing BuddyPress (needs updating?)
- Installing BuddyPress on Secondary Blog (needs updating?)
*Shouldn’t those 3 be in one sub category?- Configuring BuddyPress components (needs updating?)
- Group settings and roles (needs updating?)
- How to Set up Your Main Site Navigation Using the Built-in WordPress Menus (graphics help lower end users)
Is this all really getting started though – surely it’s getting started and then some?
My suggestion would be the next ones own section:
- Reporting Bugs (needs updating?)
- FAQ (needs updating?)- Language Translations – own section?
Troubleshooting (bring FAQ into this and make own section? – should be updated by forum peeps?)
- Navigation Links Return 404 Errors
- Blank Pages
- Avatar upload failsBuddyPress Site Administration
* Title seems a tad ‘developery’
- BuddyPress Components (needs updating?)
- BuddyPress Forums (needs updating?)
- Using an existing bbPress installation for your BuddyPress Forums (needs updating?)
- Backing Up Your Database and Files
- Upgrading BuddyPress
- Deleting BuddyPress
- Importing Data
- Exporting Data
- Improving PerformanceExtending BuddyPress
- Installing a BP-compatible Theme
- Installing BP plugins- functions.php
- bp-custom.php
* Sub section about files for those 2?- Tips – Tricks – Code Snippets (Own section and should be fleshed out)
- Customizing Labels, Messages, and URLs
Changing Internal Configuration SettingsTheme Development
- Theme Dev: The bp-default Theme
- Theme Dev: bp-default Theme Changelog
- Theme Dev: Modifying the BuddyPress admin bar
- Theme Dev: Building a BuddyPress Child Theme
- Theme Dev: Upgrading a BuddyPress 1.0 Theme for BuddyPress 1.1
* Still needed?
- Theme Dev: Making my WordPress theme BuddyPress compatible
- Theme Dev: BP Template Pack Walkthrough – Easy LevelPlugin Development
- Plugin Dev: BP Plugin API
- Plugin Dev: Creating a Custom BuddyPress Component
- Plugin Dev: Checking Whether BuddyPress is Active
*Fairly sure this section could have some loveDeveloper Docs *bring Plugin development under this?
- BuddyPress Template Tags
- Function Reference
- Conditional Template Tags
- Custom BuddyPress Loops
- The $bp Global
- Group Extension API
- IIS7 web.config
- Action ReferenceAll above seem to be missing what JQuery API has ie; the searchable easy to get information from API resource – this would be really useful I think.
- Official fonts and logos *developer?
What we don’t have maybe should:
- Videos
Links to WordPress tv but also perhaps how to install, ones from trusted resources?- How to submit a patch / svn
- Ways to get involved
- Outside resources / trusted links – maybe link in articles that are worthwhile and put on blog too
Not content but points to consider:
- Images speak to lower users – the codex lacks graphics for how tos perhaps that would help lower end users?- Connection between blog and codex. Should we be having more saying when information is there / updated on the blog?
- Should we poll / ask community what they want in forums?
- Proper search is 101 requirement
- More feeding back from forum questions like we did for plugins in 1.5. Modemlooper said he wanted to flesh out the tips and tricks and to me this is / should be a 2 way process with this becoming along with other sections an easy ‘link to’ resource for those in forums helping. I think perhaps that was what you had in mind Modemlooper?
- What about places to get themes / plugins? Maybe have featured lists?
What are the people that are going to use this?
- Developers (possibly main one)
- Site admins
- Designers
- Who else?
… considering these would help with the tone and what content too.I don’t think at this point we need a ‘I’ll do’ more a list of tasks then we can all see and fit into what is required. Probably some priorities also – all calls for JJJ and Foxly.
Also a good thing to do maybe would be add to the list here what others think would be good.
September 7, 2011 at 8:34 pm #2717A further thought to add we could do with some simple theme how tos:
- Custom header
- Simple CSS stuff
- Custom background…
- Enqueue override.. and so onSeptember 12, 2011 at 7:25 am #2736Thanks for putting this together!
@foxly any suggestions on how you think any of this should be prioritized?
September 14, 2011 at 6:58 pm #2741Prioritizing tasks in a large project with hundreds of items is a very dynamic thing. To avoid repeatedly updating a huge list in the forums, I suggest we use Pivotal Tracker. It lets us drag tasks around to prioritize them.

September 14, 2011 at 7:47 pm #2746The theme how to’s should be in a section called Customizing BuddyPress along with the code snippets
October 7, 2011 at 7:42 pm #3016There are new/updated articles in Codex
Getting Started > What You Should Know
Theme Development > Theme Dev: Making my WordPress theme compatible with BuddyPress 1.5
Theme Developement > Theme Dev: BP Template Pack Walkthrough – Twenty Eleven BP 1.5
On my end, in the works:
- Theme Dev: BP Template Pack Walkthrough – Twenty Ten BP 1.5
- Installing BuddyPress – Update this and include images for clarity
- Upgrading BuddyPress – same as above@johnjamesjacoby any way we can upload images here? Or shall we wait till this Codex is changed from Pages to Post types or something else? Currently I upload to and link images from wordpress.com account
February 9, 2012 at 6:22 pm #3651Also required, a list of Actions and Filters. Where to insert them in the hierarchy of the Codex please?
February 9, 2012 at 7:28 pm #3653@leaplaw – We only have two forums here; no reason to cross post to both of them.
